BORN SEPTEMBER 12th:

H. L. Mencken (1880-1956) American man of letters known for The American Language. Proud son of Baltimore, Maryland, where he was born and died. Famed for his acerbic pen, as a working journalist he covered the trial of a Tennessee teacher accused of teaching evolution and dubbed it the "Monkey Trial."
