Daniel Defoe (1660-1731) English writer of Robinson Crusoe and Moll Flanders" He helped popularize the very idea of the English novel; it's said that Robinson Crusoe is second only to the Bible in the number of translations made from English. He also did prison time for some of his political tracts.
