BORN SEPTEMBER 14th:
William H. Brewer (1828-1910) American botanist. A native of New York state, he worked on the first California Geological Survey and wrote numerous letters to friends and family, which in 1930 were assembled and published as Up and Down California in 1860-64. His papers are archived at Yale on 36 linear feet of shelving.
