Oct. 4: Rembrandt van Rijn, Dutch painter

DIED OCTOBER 4th:

Rembrandt van Rijn (1606-1669) Dutch painter whose paintings include The Night Watch; The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp; and Syndics of the Drapers' Guild. The opulence of his works reflects the wealth of the Netherlands in his times, the so-called "Dutch Golden Age." Despite the vast explorations of his countrymen, the artist himself never left home, yet was inspired by the influx of cultural artifacts brought home by others, including Italian art.
