BORN OCTOBER 30:
Ezra Pound (1885-1972) American expat poet and critic who encouraged and published such up-and-coming notables as T. S. Eliot, Ernest Hemingway, and James Joyce. He was also arrested as a fascist collaborator in Italy during World War II, but was deemed mentally unfit to stand trial. Instead he lived in mental wards for 13 years. Best noted for his daunting 800-page epic poem The Cantos.
