Dec. 3: Joseph Conrad, Polish-British novelist

BORN DECEMBER 3:

Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) Polish-British novelist. While regarded as one of the greatest novelists to write in the English language, the fact is Conrad was an immigrant who could not speak English fluently until his twenties. His non-English sensibilities may have helped. Writing near the British Empire's peak, the human elements in his stories are sometimes overshadowed by a creeping superiority that led prize-winning Nigerian author Chinua Achebe to denounce his Heart of Darkness (source of Francis Ford Coppola's 1979 epic film Apocalypse Now) for being racist and dehumanizing. He also wrote Lord Jim, Typhoon, Nostromo, and others.
