Sep. 9: Leo Tolstoy, Russian author

BORN SEPTEMBER 9th:

Leo Tolstoy (1828-1910) Russian author known for novels such as War and Peace, Anna Karenina, and The Death of Ivan Ilyich. Though a titled Count, Tolstoy became increasingly sensitive to the needs of the poor, redistributing his wealth to the recently-freed peasants and building thirteen schools for their children on his estate. He was also a vegetarian for the last 23 years of his life.
