H. G. Wells (1866-1946) English novelist who wrote The Time Machine; The Invisible Man; The War of the Worlds; The Island of Doctor Moreau. His The Outline of History is a very entertaining look at the subject. His use of everyday details in extraordinary contexts caused Joseph Conrad to exclaim of him, "O Realist of the Fantastic!"
