Mar. 11: Douglas Adams, British author

BORN MARCH 11:

Douglas Adams (1952-2001) was an English author, screenwriter, essayist, satirist, and playwright. Best known for his five book trilogy The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy (first heard as a BBC radio comedy, and later adapted to a TV series, several stage plays, comics books, a video game, and a feature film), he wrote in several media. He also wrote two books starring Dirk Gently, the "holistic detective," along with scripts for Dr. Who and sketches for Monty Python. Sadly, he died at age 49 after resting from his regular workout at a private gym. The irony would not have been lost on him.

Jan. 26: Philip José Farmer, American author of science fiction

BORN JANUARY 26:

Philip José Farmer (1918-2009) American author of science fiction, best known for sequences of novels such as the World of Tiers and Riverworld series. He often mixed real and classic fictional characters and worlds, and real and fake authors, and pioneered the use of sexual and religious themes in his work.

Jan. 2: Isaac Asimov, American sci-fi writer and scientist

BORN JANUARY 2:

Isaac Asimov (1920-1992) prolific American sci-fi writer and professor of biochemistry; with Robert A. Heinlein and Arthur C. Clarke, considered one of the "Big Three" science fiction writers. The Foundation series (seven books) is required reading; then, maybe, the stories in I, Robot; the Galactic Empire series; the Robot series; Nightfall; and essay collections.

Oct. 8: Frank Herbert, American science fiction writer

BORN OCTOBER 8th:

Frank Herbert (1920-1986) American science fiction writer who wrote Dune and its five sequels. He wrote other series, and short stories, as well as working as a newspaper journalist. All of this, however, is overshadowed by Dune which, having sold around 20 million copies worldwide, is considered the best-selling science fiction novel of all time. It is also widely agreed to be an inspiration for the Star Wars saga of George Lucas.

Sep. 21: H. G. Wells, English novelist

BORN SEPTEMBER 21st::

H. G. Wells (1866-1946) English novelist who wrote The Time Machine; The Invisible Man; The War of the Worlds; The Island of Doctor Moreau. His The Outline of History is a very entertaining look at the subject. His use of everyday details in extraordinary contexts caused Joseph Conrad to exclaim of him, "O Realist of the Fantastic!"
