BORN OCTOBER 9th:
Camille Saint-Saens (1835-1921) French composer. In addition to many more serious works, he also wrote the delightful tone poems Danse Macabre, which evokes images of dancing skeletons, and the 14 movements of The Carnival of Animals. The latter was so much fun that Saint-Saens prohibited its public performance during his lifetime, fearing it would damage his reputation as a "serious composer." Tortoises, elephants, kangaroos, and donkeys? What could go wrong?
