BORN DECEMBER 9:

John Milton (1608-1674) English poet and man of letters whose Paradise Lost is one of the great (but barely readable for most) classics of English literature. His poems (including "Lycidas" and "On the Morning of Christ's Nativity") are worth a look; the "legal stuff" (Tractate on Education; Areopagitica) is unnecessary.
